HypnosisUp to 90% of the population are capable of entering a hypnotic state. Of these up to 10% can be taken into a trance where minor operations may be performed. We all go into and out of trance several times every day. Trance is one of the natural states of the mind. Often in everyday life a trance is induced when we fixate on a particular sound or sight. For instance, watching TV, or long car drives, or any prolonged exposure to a droning, confusing sound can create a trance state. Hypnosis can be defined as "the guiding of a person into a trance state for an agreed purpose". In the same way self-hypnosis is "self guidance into a trance state for a defined purpose". Trance is an altered state of consciousness, where our attention has become focused on something other than our immediate environment. A trance state occurs when the mind slows down. This can be achieved by deep breathing and full body relaxation. Practitioners of hypnotism believe that the mind has different levels of consciousness. While under hypnosis, or in trance, the critical part of the mind is bypassed. This means the subconscious part is receptive to suggestions. Ancient Egyptians and Greeks used healing trances and tribes in Africa and the Americas used dancing and drumming for hypnotic effect. Modern hypnotherapy emerged from the work of 18th century Austrian doctor Franz Mesmer, but the most modern form of hypnosis which is used today is based on the work of Milton Erickson. Treatment usually lasts for 50 minutes and may continue over several weeks. It is NOT possible to hypnotize an unwilling person. Back to top |
